چکیده

Parametric waveform, monoand multiscale analyses methods are used to characterize the properties of the 410 discontinuity. The characterization involves the estimation of the sharpness, smoothness and extent of this transition from Pds converted phases. In our approach sharpness is no longer associated with the extent of the first-order discontinuity. Instead, the sharpness is related to the fractional order of a generalized transition, parametrized by this order and two additional parameters, expressing smoothing and extent/thickness length scales. Estimates for the parameters are derived by complementary parametric and direct scale analysis methods. Discontinuity characterization is used to construct a generalized transition model. This model is shown to accurately capture detailed information on the transition, which is necessary to obtain useful information on mineralogical changes that may occur at the 410 km transition.

Receiver functions in the western United States, with implications for upper mantle structure and dynamics

[1] Investigations into mechanisms driving surface tectonics commonly search for mantle sources, but few observations constrain flow in the upper mantle and transition zone. Here variations in the upper mantle discontinuities at 410 km and 660 km below the western United States are revealed through mapping depths of compressional-to-shear wave conversions recorded by broadband seismometers. The...

Mantle reflectivity structure beneath oceanic hotspots

S U M M A R Y This study applies high-resolution Radon transform to a large set of SS precursors and explores the mantle reflectivity structure beneath 17 potentially ‘deep-rooted’ hotspots. The combined reduced time (τ ) and ray parameter (p) information effectively constrains the depth, spatial distribution and sharpness of upper-/mid-mantle reflectors. The olivine to wadsleyite phase boundar...

Crust and upper mantle discontinuity structure beneath eastern North America

[1] Crust and mantle discontinuities across the eastern margin of the North American craton were imaged using P to S converted phase receiver functions recorded by the Missouri to Massachusetts Broadband Seismometer Experiment. Crustal structure constrained by modeling Moho conversions and reverberations shows a variation of Moho depth from a minimum of 30 km near the Atlantic coast to depths o...

Seismic Velocity and Density Jumps Across the 410- and 660-Kilometer Discontinuities.

The average seismic velocity and density jumps across the 410- and 660-kilometer discontinuities in the upper mantle were determined by modeling the observed range dependence in long-period seismic wave arrivals that reflect off of these interfaces. The preliminary reference Earth model (PREM) is within the computed 95 percent confidence ellipse for the 410-km discontinuity but outside the allo...

Thermal, hydrous, and mechanical states of the mantle transition zone beneath southern Africa

Observations of P-to-S conversions from the seismic discontinuities near 410 and 660 km depth reveal the shoaling of the 410-km discontinuity and the deepening of the 660-km discontinuity beneath the Archaean cratons in southern Africa; consequently, the mantle transition zone is 20 km thicker than beneath post-Archaean regions and the global average. The discontinuity structure, combined with ...
